How Long Should Your Reception Last?

To answer this question you have to ask yourself what kind of ending do I want my guests to remember? The majority of our clients are looking for a party that goes all night long, or at least the full time contractually given to them by their venue. As logical, and fun as this may sound, many times it's not the best option to leave a lasting impression on the guests.

We have entertained at hundreds of receptions over the years, and from our experience, the most fun, and memorable receptions have lasted between 4 and 4.5 hours. Why? Because you are ending a party with the majority of all guests still in attendance, dancing, and wanting more. The wanting more part here is key!

While this is not true for all 5 to 6 hour receptions, there are many that end with friends and family members picking up centerpieces, gathering presents, and watching the last 10 drunkest guest dance until the contracted time runs out. There is no doubt that you will be getting every minute paid for, but not always the way to make the most memorable reception.

Don't overlook the importance of the timing of your reception. It is key in leaving a lasting impression amongst your guests!

Quick Tip: Don't Overload Your Guests

One common mistake that we see event host make is incorporating too many events, or forms of entertainment throughout the night. The goal of coarse is to give the guests more ways of enjoying themselves, but the end result many times causes your guests to become overwhelmed, or even distracted.

We once had a bride who told us that her biggest priority was to have guest dancing all night long! Little did we know, a cigar roller was brought in to roll specialty cigars for her guests. There was no doubt that this was a great idea, other than the fact that smoking has to take place outside. It's nearly impossible to have "guests dancing all night" if they're outside away from the music, dance floor, etc.

Be very cautious of what your goals are for the night, and pick options for your guests accordingly. Too much of a good thing is still too much. More isn't always better. Hold on to your best ideas for adding spice and personality to your event while keeping your priorities for the night in mind.
